370% increase in container prices - what does it mean for you?
The surge in prices has led to a surge in fraudulent and cloned websites being promoted through Google and Facebook duping unsuspecting punters into paying thousands for shipping containers that never turn up.
The Drewry World Container Index, rose to US$9,371 per 40-foot container for the week to August 5, 2021. This is 370 per cent higher than the same week a year earlier and the 16th consecutive week of increases.
Industry experts estimate 60 to 70 % of shipping containers - outside of shipping products around the world - are bought for storage by: small business, farmers, schools, councils, people moving house etc., and there is a growing market for use as home offices, workshops and cafes.
The major price surges have led to a massive proliferation of fraud shipping container websites, tricking people into thinking they’re buying a product from a legitimate business.
With scammer websites taking most top paid advertising spots on Google, the legitimate sellers are looking like the odd ones out.
It is also further harming legitimate businesses by setting a much lower price expectation which is driving clicks to scam websites that have paid for top spots on Google Search.
