Aerodynamics, bikes and safety

Egan Bernal, the 2019 Colombian Tour de France, champion collided with stationary bus whilst out training on the 24th January this year.

He suffered 20 broken bones, as well as collapsing both lungs. He had to undergo seven surgeries, including two on his spine, and it was thought he had a "95 % chance of becoming a paraplegic".

This has led to calls for a ban on the aero position in cycling by none other than fellow Tour de France champion Chris Froome.

Remarkably Bernal was able to leave the hospital just a fortnight after his crash, with a statement from the medical team there saying he "has no complications and all his injuries are stable and in the process of recovery".

“I did an interval, ahead of my teammates, I look ahead and there’s nothing,” Bernal began to explain the moments before the crash. “There’s a car behind me that’s escorting me. I keep doing my interval and I remember that I was going 58 km/h. That is like hammer down with the wind in your favour. I was going 58. I start looking and it was 59, 60, 61, 62, and it was when I saw that speed that I crashed into the bus.”

You can reduce wind resistance a lot by getting into the aero position but if you can’t see where you are going that is not going to help on an open road.

Anyone want to buy my time trial bike ?
