This was up from 6 billion on 2019.
Amazon also destroyed two million fake items in their fulfilment centres, before they could be shipped to consumers
The Amazon Counterfeit Crimes Unit expects to be getting very busy over the next few months as holiday sales start to ramp up.
The rise of ‘new market places’ such as platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok (which recently passed a billion active users each month) has intensified the counterfeit issue. Analytics firm Ghost Data found that the number of Instagram accounts offering counterfeit goods tripled over a three year period.

Facebook, which owns Instagram has started working with brands to tackle the issue and recently enjoined with Gucci to sue an alleged counterfeiter for selling fake Gucci goods on Facebook and Instagram. Recently they improved their brand safety tools to help merchants search Instagram that infringes on their intellectual property.
It is good to see brands taking responsibility to protect their consumers from counterfeits and fraud. With the holiday festive season approaching fast the counterfeiters and the anti-counterfeiters are going to be very busy over the next three months.
