Are patents too expensive?

Patents can be too expensive and they can be great value. 
It really depends on the objectives for the patent in the first place. 

Take this single Brompton GB patent, which probably cost £5-£10k, yet saves them £200k per year in corporation tax - goes straight to the bottom line.
Assuming the patent remains valid for 20 years, the patent box tax relief scheme remains in force and profits remain the same, this would be £10k well spent. Payback of 10 x ROI in the first year and for another 19 subsequent years!
