Climate change is considered an existential challenge for the planet.
To solve the associated issues we need a step change in our approach.
A situation where we have the best brains collaborating is likely to have
a greater impact than one where the best brains are working in isolation.
To some, intellectual property is about closing the door and retaining ownership just for the few, and this has been a philosophical and cultural challenge for those who prefer the open approach to development.
My view is different however, in that Intellectual Property provides a management construct for ideas, innovation and creativity to be shared in an organised manner where the originator is acknowledged and maybe rewarded, and where others can build on the ideas so created. Countries, businesses and individuals generally prefer recognition (and reward) for their contributions and this is where Intellectual Property plays its part and well.
Climate change is a world issue that requires collaboration to solve.
Intellectual Property should have a significant role in facilitating climate change collaboration across continents, nations, organisations and people.
