Chips with everything - even in Italy

A massive increase in investment in chip manufacturing is taking place across the world at the moment.
This reflects the global shortage and our reliance on silicon chips for phones, computers, cars, washing machines and satellites.

The sums are staggering, TSMC is investing $99bn through 2023 in new manufacturing capability; Intel $95bn and even the Italian government is offering $4.6bn of investment to attract Intel and St Microelectronics investment in the country. 

The thing is making semiconductor microprocessors is hard and getting harder.

Chip companies try to pack more transistors into chips, enhancing performance and making devices more power efficient. Intel’s first microprocessor released in 1971 contained only 2,300 transistors with a node size of 10 microns, or 10 millionths of a metre. Nowadays transistors dimensions are down to 5 nanometers, or 5 billionths of a meter (for comparison, an average human hair is 100,000 nanometers wide.)

No surprise then that there is a ton of intellectual property that goes into chip manufacture: TSMC has 10,000 patents and 130,000 trade secrets for example, demonstrating the importance it places on keeping its IP secret.
