You can you protect your software with IP but it is a blended approach to IP protection that is important.
This will include registered rights like trademarks and also designs and copyright. It may include patents if there is a technical effect from the software.
It might include trade secrets to protect for example the code.
It will include contracts with employees, partners and developers about who owns the IP (you) and what can be shared about the software with others (very little).
It will include a review of source code licenses to make sure you fully understand any risks of 3rd party claims on your code.
Finally imho one of the most important aspects is to develop an IP culture within your company - this can prove to be one of the most valuable of all.
