Donald Trump clearly unhappy with available social media has started developing his own, however he has run into trouble with open-source license requirements and may be sued!
Many people misunderstand the ‘rules’ associated with using open-source software. In this case trump used code owned by Mastodon but did not comply with the license requirements, and therefore is at risk of being sued for copyright infringement.
The Mastodon license agreement basically says using Mastodon’s code is fine just so long as you make the code and ensuing modifications to your Mastodon-powered platform freely available for all !
Apparently TRUTH Social encourages “honest global conversation” yet strangely it appears to claim all source code from Trump’s social media site is “proprietary,” and controlled solely by Truth Social !
Truth Social is now accused of violating the Mastodon “AGPLv3” software license. Lawyers for Mastodon have sent a letter, demanding Trump’s platform release its source code. “After being notified by the copyright holder, Truth Social has 30 days to comply or the license may be permanently revoked,” Mastodon’s announcement says.
