“I just want more people to realise they cannot just copy and paste my photos into their content”
Philip J A Benton is a friend and local photographer who captures images of sports and excels at company branding.
Over coffee the other day he expressed his frustration at people’s general lack of understanding about what you can and can’t do with copyrighted © work.
With a background in digital design and online marketing, Phil knows only too well the hurdles businesses face when trying to get good images. He rails against the tasteless use of stock images which ‘we can all see through straight away’ and says “using your own library of images makes your business more authentic and appealing”.
The additional risk of not using your own images is infringing Copyright. Some businesses think it is ok to copy a photographer’s images from twitter and social media platforms to incorporate into their own content.
Copyright is automatically granted to the creator and you are not at will to use their images without express permission and paying for the licence to do so.
Phil takes some excellent images at football games but what appeals most to me is the way he captures the emotions of the supporters in the crowd. There is a real skill to this, not to mention the costs of equipment and this is the reason Copyright © exists.
Value, manage and protect your own IP but at the same time value others IP and in this case recognise what has gone into creating the image you adore and why Copyright exists to protect the artist and creator.
