A lot of my family have been in the education business, and I always thought that I did not have the patience to be a good teacher. Recently however I've spent some really enjoyable sessions working with businesses (and students) to help them understand the value of intellectual property, and I have found it highly rewarding.
As I have discussed before on here, I believe the standard of knowledge and understanding around intellectual property is very low in the UK and in other countries. In my 16 years of formal education including an MBA at a good school there was little or no mention of IP. On speaking with current MBA and degree level students, the same is true.
Is anyone really surprised that the standard of education around intellectual property is very high in China? In a recent conversation with a highly successful investment professional who invests in ‘good’ intellectual property, he recounted a story of how 10 years ago on a family holiday in China and whilst visiting a great dam, their guide was able to explain in detail the nuances of the intellectual property involved in all aspects of building the dam!
In my own recent experience, it is very rewarding when in my training sessions that people have a ‘revelation’ and connect intellectual property in some context to their own personal experience - the light bulb moment!

My good friend Donal O’Connell has recently conducted an extensive survey on the standard of IP education in business and these results will be available shortly. It is sufficient to say that Donal is feeling good about the prospects for his new and comprehensive business IP education programme.
Smart investors are apparently looking for good organisational IP. As Dr Chris Donegan has long since identified this organisational IP includes people, process, platform and the fourth one purpose. The more I work with businesses the more I recognise this to be true. Identifying this is important to good investors and in the same way developing this within your business is really important to attract investment.
In my experience many businesspeople recognise intellectual property even if they don't use the correct terminology, However imagine if all your employees fully understood intellectual property and were able to go about their work creating, identifying, capturing, protecting, managing and finally driving value for your business from your intellectual property.
As someone said in one of my sessions recently if we aren't able to recognise the value of our own intellectual property, how can we expect anyone else to?
